“You Can’t Lose What You Never Had” — Ibrahim Chatta Breaks Silence on AMVCA Snub

Veteran Nollywood actor Ibrahim Chatta has addressed his long-standing absence from the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), clarifying that it has been a matter of personal choice, not industry neglect.

In a candid interview on the Curiosity Made Me Ask podcast, the 54-year-old actor, recently nominated for Best Lead Actor for his role in House of GAA, which ultimately went to Femi Adebayo—explained that he has never submitted his works for AMVCA consideration. “Why should I be praying for something I’m not interested in?” he said. “Whenever I’m ready, I’ll submit a film. Until then, there’s nothing to judge.”

Chatta also touched on his limited presence at glitzy industry events, suggesting his reserved nature may contribute to being overlooked for invitations. However, he dismissed any notion that this diminishes his impact or acclaim. “How many awards are in my house?” he asked, referencing notable honours such as the Nelson Mandela Award, The Pink Award with Wole Soyinka, and recognition from over 41 million northern Nigerian youths.

Setting the record straight once and for all, Chatta concluded: “I have not lost AMVCA. You do not lose what you do not have.”
