Afrobeats superstar and Grammy-nominated artist David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has opened up about the backlash he’s faced in his career due to his privileged background, revealing how his father’s wealth became a source of criticism rather than support.
Speaking on the Culture Knock Out podcast, Davido reflected on how the son of billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke made many question his authenticity in the music industry. According to him, the criticism intensified only after he had already made a name for himself.
“I’m the most criticised artist in Nigeria,” he said. “In the beginning, people didn’t know my dad was rich, so I had a chance to prove myself. By the time they found out, it was too late—I already had three hit songs out.”
Despite the “rich kid” stigma, Davido said his drive to make music far outweighed the comforts that wealth could offer. “I didn’t care if I had to be homeless. I just wanted to do music,” he shared.
He also spoke candidly about the price of fame: “It happens to everyone—once you become the biggest in anything, the criticism follows. You’re loved when you’re rising, but when you get to the top, they start to hate you.”
Through resilience and an unrelenting work ethic, Davido has silenced many of his critics, solidifying his place as one of Africa’s most successful and influential music exports.
