Nollywood actor turned politician Desmond Elliot has finally addressed the buzz surrounding his bold outfit at the recent Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA)—and let’s just say, he knew exactly what he was doing.
The Lagos lawmaker had social media talking after he hit the red carpet in a striking black shirt and skirt set, featuring a loud, elephant-themed print. The look sparked a mix of reactions online, but Desmond isn’t sweating the criticism. According to him, the outfit was a deliberate statement.
In an interview with Punch, Elliot explained that because he’s now more focused on politics, he doesn’t attend many entertainment events. So when he does show up, he wants to make it count.
“I’m more in politics now, and it means the few times you have the opportunity, just come out different. Don’t make too much noise, but let people see a lot of noise in what you are doing,” he said.
For Elliot, turning 50 is a milestone that calls for boldness—not playing it safe.
“It could go either way. You fit kill am, or you mess am up. Life na about taking chances. At 50, you gats take bold chances.”
As for the elephant print that dominated his outfit? There’s meaning behind it. Desmond said the animal symbolizes everything he stands for.
“What gives me confidence now is the fact that I have an elephant imprint. It’s been my watchword because of what the elephant stands for—power, strength, loyalty, stability, love.”
When asked how he feels about being in the spotlight, the actor-turned-lawmaker admitted it’s not always his comfort zone, but he’s learned to live with it.
“I won’t say I love it, but it’s okay. These days, I no too do pass myself. When you don waka reach that ‘midlife crisis’ level, you go just dey go with how you feel.”
And is he currently going through a midlife crisis? With a laugh, he replied, “That’s if I’m not still inside it.” One thing’s for sure—whether or not his outfit was your style, Desmond Elliot proved he’s not afraid to take risks, reinvent himself, and remind everyone that he’s still very much in the game.
