The Nigerian entertainment industry is still reeling from the sudden loss of Nollywood actress and body positivity advocate, Monalisa Ayobami Stephen. As fans, friends, and loved ones continue to mourn, her family has now announced that she will be laid to rest on Thursday, May 22, 2025.
Monalisa tragically passed away on May 13 in Lagos, at just 34 years old, following complications related to low blood sugar and internal bleeding.
In a statement shared on her official Instagram page on Wednesday, her family confirmed that the burial will be held as a private ceremony, in accordance with her wishes.
“We lay our beloved Monalisa Ayobami Stephen to rest this Thursday, May 22, 2025. In honour of her wishes and the family’s, this will be a private ceremony. We ask for continued prayers and respect for her memory during this time. Forever in our hearts,” the message read.
Monalisa was best known for her roles in Breaded Life and Mami Wata, but her impact reached far beyond the screen. She was a fearless advocate for mental health, self-love, and plus-size representation — using her platform to speak candidly about depression, body image struggles, and the importance of embracing one’s true self.
Her authenticity and courage resonated deeply with many, making her a beacon of hope and empowerment for countless Nigerians.
Though her life was cut short, Monalisa’s legacy endures — through her performances, her advocacy, and the lives she touched with her unwavering honesty and vibrant spirit.
She may be gone, but she remains, truly, forever in our hearts.
