“Just Be Chill”: Davido Opens Up on Why He’s the Most-Followed African Artist

In a music industry where mystique is often mistaken for prestige, Afrobeats superstar Davido is rewriting the script — not just with his music, but with his digital presence. The Nigerian hitmaker has offered insight into what he believes is the secret to his unmatched popularity across social media: authenticity.

In a candid conversation on BET Talks, Davido, born David Adeleke, explained that his record as the most-followed African artist across all major social media platforms isn’t just a stroke of luck or PR wizardry — it’s the result of being unapologetically himself.

“I’m free with my fans,” he said. “In the beginning of my career, I was very open. I used to do vlogs, showing people my life. A lot of Nigerian and African artists are always scared to show their real selves.”

Davido’s digital presence is as vibrant and unscripted as his performances. From posting casual moments in shorts and slippers to sharing behind-the-scenes clips of his tours, the “Feel” crooner has crafted an online identity that resonates deeply with fans, not just as a megastar but as a relatable human being.

“A lot of celebrities overthink and overdo things,” he explained. “When I moved back to Nigeria, I saw it. But I said to myself, no, just be chill, go with the flow.”

While many artists prefer to curate their image with calculated perfection, Davido attributes his openness to his dual upbringing between Nigeria and the United States. According to him, living in America broadened his mindset and taught him the importance of being genuine.

“I think living in America helped me a lot, too. Because my mind is kind of open a little bit,” he said. “I’m not saying my people are ignorant. But let’s see them taking pictures in shorts and slippers while chilling in their homes. Some artists won’t do that. They would want to change to something more ‘fitting.’ But I still see myself as a regular person.”

Yet, despite his laid-back approach, Davido knows when to switch gears. “And when it’s time to turn up, trust me, I turn up,” he laughed.

As social media continues to bridge the gap between celebrities and their audiences, Davido’s approach might just be a blueprint for the future: less perfection, more connection.

In an era where authenticity is currency, Davido isn’t just rich in followers — he’s wealthy in relatability.
