Reality TV star and former Big Brother Naija housemate, Uriel Oputa, has taken a firm stand against the growing trend of age-shaming among Nigerian men, calling it not only offensive but a direct insult to the gift of life.
In a passionate message shared via her Instagram page, Uriel expressed frustration with the mindset that uses a woman’s age as a tool for mockery, especially in a society where natural aging is often viewed through a critical lens.
>’m “It is an insult to God to use age discrimination against a woman,” she declared. “There is no shame in aging. Aging is a privilege, not a curse.”
Uriel explained that the issue became personal after she posted a video online, only to be met with comments not about the content or message of the video, but about her age. She criticised those who focus on her growing older rather than engaging with the ideas she shares.
“You’re not smart enough to digest and use the concept that was taught to better your life. What you hold on to is ‘you’re getting old,’” she said, visibly disappointed.
The health and wellness advocate added that aging gracefully should be seen as an achievement, not a flaw, especially in a world where many die young or are robbed of the chance to experience life fully.
“I’d rather grow old than be six feet under with regrets,” she said. “Some people have all the money in the world and still wish they had one more day to breathe.”
Uriel’s statement has sparked widespread conversation online, with many commending her courage and echoing her message. Her comments highlight a deeper societal issue — the unrealistic expectations placed on women to remain youthful indefinitely, often at the expense of their self-worth and dignity.
She concluded her message with a powerful reminder:
“Don’t mock what you cannot understand. One day, life will remind you.”
