Award-winning Nigerian singer, Reekado Banks, has shed light on the darker side of the music industry, warning up-and-coming artists about the presence of predatory figures behind the scenes.
In a candid conversation with podcaster Esther Oye, the former Mavin Records signee revealed that a certain powerful individual within the industry has consistently manipulated and exploited young talents under the guise of mentorship and collaboration. Although Reekado chose not to name the individual, he described the figure as “demonic” and accused him of causing setbacks in the careers of almost every artist he’s worked with.
“There is one big man in the music industry who is demonic and taking advantage of young talents. I have worked with him before. Other young artists have also worked with him,” Reekado said. “Every artist this man has worked with always experiences a certain setback, and they find themselves in a mess.”
Reekado explained that his encounter with the individual left a negative mark on his journey, adding that the pattern of career derailment among other young artists who have associated with the man cannot be a coincidence.
While he declined to reveal the man’s identity for now, the singer stressed the importance of awareness, urging upcoming musicians to be vigilant and discerning about the kind of deals and relationships they enter into.
“It will be nice to educate young artistes about this man so they don’t get wrapped up in his mess. He knows himself,” he added.
Reekado’s remarks have reignited conversations around exploitation and manipulation in the Nigerian music industry, particularly the challenges emerging artists face when navigating the complex world of fame, contracts, and mentorship.
As fans and industry watchers speculate about the identity of the figure, many are calling for greater transparency and protection for new talents trying to make their mark in an increasingly competitive environment.
