Farewell to a Patriot: Remembering Muhammadu Buhari’s Legacy of Leadership and Service

In a sombre moment for the nation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced the death of his predecessor, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82 in a London hospital. The news has sent ripples of grief throughout the country, particularly among the people of Katsina State, Buhari’s home state.

In a personally signed statement, President Tinubu expressed his deep sorrow, describing the late Buhari as “a patriot, soldier, and statesman who served Nigeria with deep commitment during his lifetime.” In honour of the former president’s contributions to the nation, Tinubu has directed that all national flags be flown at half-staff for seven days across the country.

A Soldier’s Journey to Statesmanship

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Muhammadu Buhari’s journey in public service began within the ranks of the Nigerian Army. Rising through the military hierarchy, Buhari emerged as a key figure in Nigeria’s military era. In December 1983, he led a coup that ousted the civilian government of President Shehu Shagari, citing widespread corruption and mismanagement. As military head of state from 1983 to 1985, Buhari introduced strict economic and anti-corruption measures under the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) campaign—an initiative that became a hallmark of his short but impactful military regime.

Though his rule was cut short by another coup in 1985, Buhari remained an enduring figure in Nigerian politics. His austere reputation and commitment to order made him a respected, albeit controversial, figure in national discourse.

Return to Democracy: The Political Resurgence

After years of political quiet, Buhari reemerged in the democratic arena at the dawn of the Fourth Republic. He contested the presidential elections in 2003, 2007, and 2011 under different political platforms, gaining a reputation as a determined opposition leader who challenged the status quo.

In 2015, Buhari achieved a historic victory by becoming the first opposition candidate in Nigeria’s history to defeat an incumbent president. His election under the All Progressives Congress (APC) was seen as a turning point in Nigeria’s democratic development.

As president from 2015 to 2023, Buhari’s administration focused on three key pillars: anti-corruption, security, and economic recovery. He launched a renewed fight against corruption, strengthening institutions like the EFCC and supporting whistleblower initiatives. On security, he prioritized the battle against Boko Haram in the Northeast while also confronting rising banditry and kidnapping in other parts of the country.

Economically, his administration introduced various social investment programs, including N-Power, TraderMoni, and the School Feeding Program, aimed at reducing poverty and empowering the youth. Though his tenure faced criticism over economic downturns and human rights issues, Buhari remained steadfast in his belief in national discipline and integrity.

A Final Salute

President Tinubu’s tribute captures the nation’s sentiment: “It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR… Nigeria has lost one of its most dedicated sons.”

As flags fly at half-mast and the nation mourns, Buhari’s journey—from the dusty barracks of Kaduna to the grandeur of Aso Rock – serves as a reminder of the complex, enduring legacy of a man who shaped Nigeria in war and in peace.

Though gone, Muhammadu Buhari’s imprint on Nigeria’s political and military landscape remains indelible – a legacy that future generations will continue to reflect upon with both reverence and scrutiny.
