Tragedy has struck the family of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner, Ijeoma Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, as her younger sister, Ruth Otabor, has passed away.
Toff notch reports that Ruth, a recent graduate of Auchi Polytechnic, died in the early hours of Sunday, August 31, 2025, at about 6:30 a.m., barely two weeks after a devastating road accident.
The sad news was announced in a statement by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the Otabor family. The statement read in part:
“With a heavy heart, the family regrets to announce the passing on to glory of their daughter, sister, and mother on this 31st day of August 2025 at about 06:30. The family is presently grieving and would appreciate being given a private moment to mourn the departed. The funeral arrangement will be communicated to the public in due course.”
Recall that Ruth was involved in a tragic accident on August 13, 2025, near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State. She was hit by a Dangote truck allegedly driven by an underage and unlicensed driver. The crash resulted in the amputation of one of her legs.
Phyna had repeatedly called out the Dangote Group, alleging that the company reneged on its promise to provide full medical support, including flying Ruth abroad for advanced treatment. Despite medical interventions in Nigeria, Ruth succumbed to her injuries 18 days after the accident.
Her untimely death has reignited public outrage over road safety and corporate accountability. The Dangote Group has since expressed condolences to the Otabor family, assuring the public of its commitment to safety in its operations. The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) also condoled with the family and pledged to intensify road safety enforcement to prevent similar tragedies.
Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry, with celebrities such as Kate Henshaw, Bella Okagbue, Wanni, and Hero Daniels mourning Ruth’s death. Fans have also flooded Phyna’s social media pages with messages of support and prayers during this difficult period.
