Qing Madi Opens Up on Challenges Facing Women in Nigeria’s Music Industry

Nigerian singer, Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma, popularly known as Qing Madi, has spoken about the struggles female artistes encounter in the country’s music industry.

The 19 years old “American Love” crooner shared her thoughts during a recent appearance on the Wahala Podcast, where she highlighted the lack of adequate support for women in the industry.

According to Qing Madi, women are often judged more harshly than their male colleagues and are subjected to strict societal expectations. She noted that while male artistes are allowed more freedom to express themselves, women are frequently boxed in and criticised unfairly.

“Women have to do twice as much work as their male counterparts. Women are oftentimes criticised for nothing. But they don’t do that to the men. The men have the right to do whatever they like, but for the women, society just wants to box women so much,” she said.

The young star further explained that female artistes must work twice as hard to gain recognition, adding that the constant pressure makes their journey more difficult.

Despite the challenges, Qing Madi expressed pride in her identity as a female artiste and praised other women in the field for their courage and resilience.

“I go through that, which is crazy because I’m 19. So what do you want me to do? Women never get a break. So I’m super proud of being a female artist in Nigeria. And I’m super proud of every female artist in Nigeria because it takes a lot [to be one]. It’s not easy,” she added.
