Nigerian singer and actor Yhemo Lee whose name is Idowu Adeyemi, has described the online space as a hub for beggars.
He raised his concern on a post on Instagram, pointing out that the social media space that was meant for interaction and connection is now used by individuals to beg for money from strangers.
He went further to say that many users have become skilled in asking for financial help online, making little distinction between street beggars and those begging on the internet. The only difference being they have access to the Internet.
He narrated a common scenario where social media comment sections are now filled with account numbers from different people seeking financial help instead of engagement.
He further went on to ask individuals who have perfected the art of begging to exclude it from his post.
He said,”it’s no longer news that social media isn’t social media anymore. It’s now a begging site. The only difference is that unlike the beggars on the road, the beggars on the internet have data. These days, when you post a picture, the first ten comments are account numbers. My major problem is those who have a PhD in begging. Please omit all those begging from my own picture.”
