Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has voiced concern over recent law enforcement actions in Nigeria, particularly the arrest of social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, Obi described the circumstances surrounding VDM’s arrest as troubling and unsettling to many Nigerians. He warned that such actions undermine the country’s commitment to the rule of law and human rights.
Obi further expressed that these developments are casting a shadow over Nigeria’s democracy, economy, and overall business climate. He cautioned that perceived heavy-handedness by security agencies could foster a culture of fear and create dangerous precedents open to abuse by bad actors.
The former Anambra State governor emphasised the urgent need for accountability, transparency, and respect for civil liberties. He urged authorities to operate strictly within the framework of the law when addressing national concerns.
