Nigerian comedian Ekene Clinton Egbuna, popularly known as KlintonCod, has weighed in on the backlash faced by UK politician Kemi Badenoch over her recent comments about boarding school life in Nigeria.
Badenoch, who once attended the Federal Government Girls’ College in Sagamu, had likened her boarding school experience to life in prison a statement that has sparked criticism from many Nigerians. However, KlintonCod believes the outrage is misplaced.
In a post shared online, the comedian defended Badenoch, stating that Nigerians appear to dislike her simply because she speaks uncomfortable truths about the country.
“I am yet to find one solid and justifiable reason why Nigerians dislike Kemi Badenoch,” he wrote. “The only reason I’ve seen so far is that she is too honest and her honesty, according to those who dislike her, leans toward the negative side of Nigeria.”
Sharing his personal experience, KlintonCod described his own time at a boys-only boarding school in Nigeria as being “prison like,” complete with high walls and strict routines. According to him, the only major difference between his school and a correctional facility was the presence of mid-term breaks and holidays.
“I’ve never been to a Nigerian prison, but the few times I’ve visited UK prisons for work, I can confidently say those inmates had a better quality of life than I did in boarding school,” he said.
KlintonCod urged people to be honest in acknowledging the truth, even if it comes from someone they dislike. “It’s okay to hate her if you want, but it’s also okay to admit the truth when someone you dislike says it,” he added.
